Mahanati, the much awaited biopic of the year and one which the whole of Telugu audience are eagerly waiting to watch on screen. After a good round of promotions, the film is making to screens today. Did the film touch all the sensibilities of her life or only the happy ones? Let’s find out.

As obvious as it is, the story is about the life of Savitri, her journey in becoming a legendary actress, her ups and downs of life and how her life took a tragic end.

Keerthy Suresh as Savitri is the best card that the unit has pulled off in casting and she’s almost a look-alike of Savitri herself. Her makeup, body language and antics always show case Savitri on screen but not Keerthy. This will be a standout film in her entire career, one which she can boast about for a long time. Dulqer is perfect in his role and Vijay is ok. Samantha gets another interesting role and she does her part well. Rest of the crew is good and suit the bill perfectly well.

Songs and Background Music:

Mickey J Meyer has done a fantastic job with the music and the background score of the film is terrific. His score is the key to elevating some sequences and he’s done a stellar job with few sequences, especially in the last 30 minutes of the movie.

Direction, Screenplay and Dialogues

Nag Ashwin might have surprised a few by taking up this biopic as his second film itself but he’s done a commendable job with handling her story. And he succeeds not just in showcasing the bright side of her life but also by choosing to show how tragic her last days had been. Screenplay is straight and good, ably supported by good music and decent dialogues. He scores will with the direction department and looks to be a talent to look out for.

Cinematography of the film is very good and the set up in the second half of the 20th century has been showcased very well whilst keeping the richness needed for present day film screening.

Technical Values:

Production values are very good from Vijayanthi and the art work is excellent. Special mention needs to be given for the costumes and make up of Keerthy Suresh and the whole technical team needs a loud shout out for this film.

Overall, Mahanati might be a familiar story to many but the way it has been showcased on screen should be commended. The film catches you with emotion and a great background score and keeps you engaged for the most part of it. While the whole film is well made and narrated, the last few emotional minutes will be remembered for a long time.

Go watch it.
